Real Stories: Living in a Rural Prefabricated Home in the Highlands
Finding home in the Highlands.
There’s something special about living in the Scottish Highlands — the open skies, the ever-changing light, the sense of space and peace. But building here can be a challenge. The weather is wild, the plots are remote, and the logistics can test anyone’s patience. That’s why more people are turning to R.HOUSE and our prefabricated homes, designed and made for living in Scotland — houses designed to work with the landscape rather than against it. Prefabrication means much of the building happens off-site, so you spend less time waiting for a dry week and more time planning how to make it yours. We’ve spoken to a few homeowners across Skye and the Highlands to hear what life is really like inside their R.HOUSE prefabricated homes.
Iona and Family — Returning to Skye
When Iona and her family decided to return home to Skye, they wanted a house that would sit lightly in the landscape and stand up to island weather — especially given their exposed location.
“We wanted a hands-off approach since we were living in Switzerland at the time,” Iona says. “It wasn’t a stressful process for us. We just wanted a warm, comfortable space that felt part of the view.”
Their timber-framed home, built with prefabricated panels, was up in a day and weather-tight within a week. From their windows, there’s beautiful views across the Minch and the Trotternish Ridge.
“The house keeps its heat really well,” Iona adds. “And we love how the architects careful positioning captures and frames the views.”
Iain and Alyson — A Big Move to the Highlands and Islands
For Iain and Alyson, living in the Highlands had always been a dream, but finding a home that balanced practicality and personality took time. With our help they eventually found a plot that could accommodate both their own home and a small business — a Bothy they could let.
“We have two Labradors, so we needed something tough but bright and open,” Alyson explains.
They worked with our dedicated architect, familiar with R.HOUSE’s standard designs, to create a layout that met both their personal and business needs while taking advantage of the stunning views.
“Marnie at Rural Design was great at talking us through the various planning considerations and advising on the best placement for privacy and views,” Alyson says. “Although we were living many miles away during the build, the team guided us expertly through the process — always available, responsive, and infinitely patient with our questions and design changes. We really did feel well looked after.”
“The result is beyond our expectations. Both properties are exactly as we’d hoped, and we’re so glad we added the wee Bothy to our build site. Small but perfectly formed, it gives our family and friends (and us!) a little extra private space when visiting. Perhaps the most unexpected and welcome surprise is that it’s become an exceptionally popular self-catering holiday rental.”
Prefab Living, Highland Style
The phrase prefab home used to mean boxy or basic, but that’s long gone. Today, it means well-designed, energy-efficient homes tailored to each site and lifestyle.
These homes are built to meet the demands of Highland life — strong winds, driving rain, and long winters — while keeping interiors warm and filled with light. Natural timber, large windows, and thoughtful placement make them feel both modern and rooted in the landscape.
And for many, that’s the biggest surprise: prefabricated homes can feel remarkably personal.
“It’s not about a standard box,” says Fiona, another R.HOUSE homeowner. “It’s about a design that fits where you are.”
A Sense of Place
Across the Highlands and islands, people are rethinking what it means to build and live here. Prefab homes are part of that shift — homes that are efficient without feeling clinical, and contemporary without feeling out of place.
They’re not just about technology or materials; they’re about creating homes that feel right — places to watch the light change, shelter from the wind, and put the kettle on.
