What they say
Sean McTaggart, Site Agent
I started working for James MacQueen Builders as a subcontractor bricklayer in March 2019 and was subsequently offered a permanent contract as Foreman, recently developing to Site Agent.
What drew me to the company was that it was a dynamic, family run business, with lots of different projects, and interesting development sites. I felt I could use my experience and expertise to make a difference and develop my skills further. JMQB have been very supportive in my personal development. I’ve undertaken many trainings, including Health and Safety CITB and First Aid work courses. “The company is like a big family, where everyone knows you by name.”
My journey in the building industry started in 2013 when I graduated from my apprenticeship from the University of Highlands and Islands in Inverness. Over the last 13 years I’ve worked on a variety of projects across Scotland which allowed me to valuable practical skills and supervisory experience to use in my current position as Site Agent. In which I oversee the development of multiple projects at one time. Coordinating labour on site and making sure everything goes to plan!
I enjoy the variety my role offers me, from working on a standalone R. HOUSE, to a development containing various R.HOUSE designs, the challenges are similar but very different and I thrive on thinking how to overcome them, as well as striving to exceed client expectations.
Current projects I’m overseeing include luxury flats in Inverness, R.HOUSE builds across the mainland of Scotland and a big development near Oban.
“My favourite part of the job is the customer satisfaction - when you and your team handover the finished product and it is what the customer dreamt of, knowing that we have exceeded expectations in every way.”
John Angus, Gate Director
I've worked with JMQB for nearly 17 years now. I began working as an apprentice bricklayer at projects across the Highlands. I served my time and qualified and over the years my role continued to develop to where I am now responsible for all Health and Safety at JMQB and oversee operations for all builds in the Skye area.
Working with JMQB has allowed me to develop my skills enormously. I have managed large scale projects such as the Mcandie Court Development in Fort William and the construction of 8 flats on Dunvegan Road, Portree, Skye.
The most enjoyable part of my job is watching and being part of the company's expansion.
Kevin McGilvary, Joiner
I began working for JMQB in January 2015, as a fully qualified joiner. I started out in the workshop, learning the R.HOUSE process and working on the prefabricated panels before quickly moving out to site. Since then I've worked on a variety of projects, ranging from social housing developments, refurbishments like Monstadt House and R.HOUSE private builds.
“I love the versatility of the job and the fact you are always learning new things, moving from one project to another.”
“It’s hard to choose a favourite part as I like all the different aspects, I particularly enjoy the finishing's, this involves working on the inside of the houses, once the initial plaster-boarding and interior partitions are up, working on the detailing, skirting and facings, moldings, etc. At Monkstadt House it was great to bring the old back to new and back to life as it were!”
I've been with MacQueens for nearly 8 years in that time I've worked my way up from Joiner to Site Foreman, which involves managing the site and being responsible for the team, making sure everything goes to plan and everyone is working together.
“It’s great to be able to help and teach the apprentices, Bop on my team at the moment in his second year of the job, so it’s great to be able to pass on my knowledge after 17 years as a joiner.”
My first Site Foreman role was managing our Social Housing Project in Staffin which has just won the Community Contribution Award at the Scottish Home Awards 2022 which is an excellent achievement!
More recently I've been leading the team erecting our kits on site. “It’s great to see the kit going up in such a short space of time, it’s really impressive.“
